Double Glazed Glass | Energy-Efficient Glass for Residential & Commercial Projects
Double glazed glass is designed to improve thermal efficiency, reduce outside noise, and create more comfortable indoor environments. By combining two glass panes with a sealed air or gas-filled cavity, double glazed units provide enhanced insulation and year-round performance for residential, commercial, and architectural projects.
Archi Glass manufactures and supplies custom double glazed glass units across Australia, including curved, oversized, and project-specific insulated glass units.
What Is Double Glazed Glass?
A double glazed unit - also called an insulated glass unit (IGU) - consists of two glass panes separated by a spacer bar and sealed around the perimeter. The cavity between the panes is filled with either dehydrated air or an inert gas, typically argon. That cavity is where the thermal performance comes from.
Heat moves through glass by conduction. A sealed cavity breaks that conduction path. The gas or air trapped inside conducts heat at a fraction of the rate that glass does, which is why a well-specified double glazed unit can reduce heat transfer by as much as 50 to 70 percent compared to a single pane of equivalent thickness.
The sealed cavity can also improve acoustic performance by reducing sound transmission, particularly when the glass types, cavity width, and overall unit configuration are specified for the project's acoustic requirements.
Types of Curved Glass
Mirror Glass
We are your trusted curved glass suppliers near you, offering curved glazing that not only adds aesthetics but also enhances energy efficiency in buildings. Our curved glass panels are perfect for creating captivating facades and reducing solar heat gain.
Double Glazed Glass
When it comes to insulation and noise reduction, curved double glazing is the answer. Our experts create curved double-glazing units where you need rounded or curved surfaces.
Toughened Glass
Safety and durability are paramount in architectural design, and as established curved glass suppliers, we also provide curved toughened glass, offering both strength and elegance. These curved toughened glass panels are ideal for balustrades and staircases.
Laminated Glass
Laminated glass is designed for applications where safety, security, acoustic performance, and structural integrity are essential. By bonding multiple glass panes with specialised interlayers, laminated glass provides enhanced protection while remaining in place if broken.
Annealed Glass
Before glass gets toughened, laminated, bent, or coated, it begins as annealed glass. It is the base material that the entire glazing industry builds from. And while it rarely gets the attention that processed glass types do, specifying it correctly matters more than most people expect
Printed Glass
Printed glass combines the performance of architectural glass with custom graphics, patterns, colours, and decorative finishes. Ideal for commercial, residential, and architectural applications, it allows designers to introduce branding, privacy, and visual impact without compromising the performance of the glazing system.
Security Glass
Security glass is designed to provide enhanced protection against forced entry, impact, and other security risks while maintaining the transparency and appearance of standard glazing.
Acoustic Glass
Acoustic glass is designed to reduce unwanted noise while maintaining the transparency and performance of modern glazing systems.
Components of a Double Glazed Unit
The performance of a double glazed unit is determined by the combination of components, not just the glass type. At Archi Glass, each unit is built to the project's specific requirements:
Glass type
annealed, toughened, or laminated panes depending on the safety rating, load requirement, and acoustic target
Cavity width
typically 12mm to 20mm. Wider cavities improve thermal performance up to a point; the optimal width depends on the gas fill and the project specification
Gas fill
argon is the most common choice. It conducts heat at approximately 67 percent of the rate of air, improving the unit's thermal resistance without adding to the unit's weight or profile
Low-E coatings
a microscopically-thin metallic coating applied to one pane surface that reflects long-wave infrared radiation. It allows daylight through while blocking radiant heat transfer
Spacer bar
separates the two panes and incorporates desiccant to help keep the cavity dry, while the perimeter seal maintains the insulated cavity.
These components affect the unit's overall U-value and acoustic rating. The specification is assembled to meet the project's performance targets, not a generic standard.
Key Features and Benefits
- Improved thermal insulation - lower energy consumption for heating and cooling across the full year
- Acoustic performance - can reduce sound transmission compared with single glazing when the unit is appropriately configured for the acoustic requirement.
- Condensation control - the inner pane stays closer to room temperature, reducing surface condensation in cold climates
- Improved thermal insulation - helps reduce heat transfer and can lower heating and cooling requirements.
- Available with toughened or laminated panes for safety-rated and structural applications
- Compatible with Low-E coatings for projects with specific energy rating targets
Common Applications
Double glazed glass is specified across a wide range of project types where thermal performance, acoustic control, or both are part of the brief:
- Residential facades, windows, and sliding door systems in climate-sensitive locations
- Commercial office buildings with energy rating requirements
- Acoustically-sensitive spaces including recording studios, medical facilities, and education buildings
- High-rise glazed facades where thermal and wind load performance must be met simultaneously
- Hospitality and hotel glazing where guest comfort depends on acoustic separation from common areas
- Passive house and high-performance residential builds targeting specific U-value thresholds
Curved Double Glazing - Where Most Suppliers Stop
Archi Glass specialises in manufacturing curved double glazed units for projects where standard flat glazing cannot meet the design requirements.
Curved double glazing requires the two panes to be formed to the required geometry while maintaining the specified cavity and perimeter seal throughout the unit. The radius, dimensions, glass configuration, and performance requirements all need to be confirmed before production.
At our Fairfield East facility in NSW, we manufacture custom curved double glazed units with a minimum bend radius of 200mm. We also produce oversized laminated and double glazed units up to 3,660mm × 20,000mm.
Each unit is manufactured to the project specification and checked against the supplied drawings before leaving our facility.
